Not what her religion wanted, her father, the duke or the duke's family. I think I saw myself in Maddy and I just wanted her to find HERself. And THEN how manipulative the duke is at times. The shame, repression etc was so hard for me. If it wasn't the Duke it was her obligation to care for her dependent father. If it wasn't her religion, it was the Duke. However, I really struggled with our h and how she had SO much pushing and pulling on her constantly. I really loved the writing and the way she conveyed their intimate moments. I really loved the first part of the book. Despite the HEA I really don't feel happy or that it was a good ending. I have some VERY mixed feelings about it. I just finished reading this book last night.
